Day 4: Where Does my Worth Come From?

What Other People Think

Sorry for the two-day hiatus.  Between family day, special music, and a stomach bug, I’ve been out of commission…but I’m back now, hopefully for the long haul.

One of the biggest turning points in changing my mind to think more positively of education, and something I still have to fight today, is knowing where I get my self-worth is from.  I think this is one of the greatest factors when it comes to positive or negative self-talk.

A few years ago, while reading “The 4:8 Principle” by Tom Newberry, I came across a quote from the book that really stuck out to me,

“What other people think about you, is none of your business”.

Since then I have repeated this to myself numerous times, especially when I perceive that someone is thinking ill of me.  This statement isn’t saying that you should treat people horribly and not worry about their well-being, actually quite the opposite is true.

I choose to place my worth in Christ and what He thinks of me.  I know that my worth in His eyes is GREAT, and not just my worth, but my students’ worth, my co-workers’ worth, parents’, administrations’, etc. (Which is perfect, since next week we are exploring relationships with others in light of “heart-ing education”.)   Therefore, my thoughts aren’t wrapped up in weather I’m good enough in other’s eyes, but knowing that I am valued in Christ’s eyes and that is what really matters.  That changes what I say about others, my work ethic, how I treat my students and so much more!

When we can overcome this self-defeating concept that we have to live up to other’s expectations, rather than God’s, we can see the value and worth in ourselves, others, and education as a whole!

I love that old hymn “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less” and I think it should also be…

“My WORTH is built on nothing less, than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.”
