Day 5: How do you Treat Your Students?

treat people as if

The last few days we’ve talked about your mind and some ways to begin to change it.  Next up, is looking outside of ourselves to the relationships that are inevitable in a school situation and so important in our journey to love education.

The relationship that you will spend the most time on is the one between you and your students.  Using the principles from the last few days, we want to change our thinking about our students if those thoughts have been less than ideal.  Beyond that we want those positive thoughts about them to formulate into positive actions.  How we treat our students is SO important!

Think about your interactions with your students in the last few days.  Have your words been building up or tearing down?  Have you shown your students that they are valuable?  Are your words and actions portraying that teaching each one of them is “more than a job”?  Do they even know you like them?

Take some time to be intentional with your students today.  Keep a mental tally of your negative comments as apposed to positive ones and make an effort to improve them.  What you think about your students and how you treat them can make all the difference.

“Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you help them become what they are capable of becoming.” — Goethe
